How does that make you feel?: artisticartistic

Hi everyone, my name is Monica. This is my first tutorial. I hope you find it informative and helpful. Thanks to everyone who voted at severalplums and pensnest for the invitation to write a tutorial!

Program used: Photoshop CS2
Level of difficulty: Relatively easy
Translatable:: Yes

Today we are going to learn how to make this ==>>Photobucket

First we take this photo:
Photobucket

1. To me it looked like the aspect ratio was a little off, so I used the Rectangular Marquee Tool and selected the entire photo. I went to edit>free transform and messed around with the ratio of the photo until his face didn't look so stretched out.

2. To change up the position a bit, I then went to image>rotate canvas>arbitrary>19 degrees clockwise.

3. I cropped the photo to get a nice sexy view of Johnny's face and a bit of chest.

4. I duplicated the base and set it to screen at 100% to lighten it up a bit.

5. Now, to put a nice color to his skin I went to layer>new fill layer>solid color> # 956100. I set it to overlay at 70%.

6. I wanted to give his face a little more color so I created another layer: layer>new>layer and took the paint brush tool and colored his lips with #ec3232 set to linear light at 20% (because you don't want him to look like he is wearing lipstick, just that he has a little color.)

7. Then I added this texture (I love this texture!): (I saved this texture to my misc. folder before I thought to credit the maker, sorry. If you know who made it, let me know.)
Photobucket
I flipped to horizontally and set it to exclusion at 100%.

8. The last step was to add a layer mask to the last layer. I double clicked the mask and used the eraser tool at 50% to get rid of some larger blemishes on his face and chest from the new layer.

This is what my layers palate looks like at the end of this ordeal:

Any and all feedback is welcome!

Thanks. It was mainly for icon tutorial journals, but I posted it here so that I could find it without wading through pages at another journal site.

He does look prety, huh?

My sister had a huge crush on him when she was in high school. I just like his cheekbones and pretty eyes.

*dies over original pic of the beautiful Johnny*

*feels hopeful at description of task being 'relatively easy'*

*dies again because am still such a Photoshop novice that even this is scarily complex*

: ) Lovely work Monica! I'm happy just to admire it!

I am a noob to photoshop as well. I still have to ask my seventeen year old brother questions all the time.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. I just learned how to take screen shot of my computer, so if you need images to help you know what I am talking about, let me know.

Thank you, I'm very glad that you like it.

What a lovely icon.

I usually experiment and later when I'm happy with the icon, I can't remember any more how I did it. ;) Of course, there are a few techniques I use on a regular basis, but all in all it's always trial and error.

I've started saving my .psd file of icons that I liked (good coloring or textures), so that I can use it again on another icon. Or if someone asks, 'how did you make that icon?'

When I was really new, I asked some icon-makers, who's icons I really liked, for pointer and they would say:"Oh, I did a little of this or that.", but nothing that really helped.

Thanks. I tried to make it easy to follow. Icon making is a lot of hit and miss.

Hey there! Not asking to friend. Just wanted to thank you for joining sexy_mood_music! I hope you're enjoying the wide range of graphics and music we've offered so far!

BTW, do you happen to know where I can promote the comm? I've got many banners but am not sure where it's safe to stick them without getting into trouble. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Take care!

I'll have to check out the community, since I just got approved.

To tell you the truth I really don't know where you can promote the community. Maybe you can ask other communities if they want to affiliate with yours.

Anyway, thanks for the response, and I hope you'll like plenty of what you see. :)
