For New Year's Eve we used to go to my mom's grandmother's house. My brothers and I called her Nene (pronounced knee-knee). There would be way to many Mexicans in one house celebrating, drinking, talking and laughing. Buñuelos and hot chocolate would be handed out for our culinary enjoyment. We would play Mexican Bingo or La Lotería for nickels or quarters. My Nene loved that game. Who am I kidding? She loved winning the jackpots. We would all pay either a nickel or quarter a game and whoever called "Bingo!", won. Sometimes she would have streaks where she couldn't win. The older kids knew to let her win her money back once in a while. *lol* Later on, we would set off fireworks at midnight in the middle of the road and the younger kids would play with sparklers. Fun times. Good times.
Now that she's gone we all do our own thing, but I miss the family thing. This year I had to work the night of the 30th. I was up most of the day on the 31st and couldn't make it to midnight. My mom understood. She had a strawberry daiquiri, I fixed myself a drink, but like always, I didn't finish it. I went to bed early and spent the first day of the year at home. I made some black eyed peas (with ham hocks and onion and garlic) for my mom. They turned out pretty damn yummy so I may have some good luck this year after all.
I know I said in a previous post that I wasn't going to make a resolution this year, but I am going to try to do a couple of things this year. First and foremost, it's been almost two months since my trip to London and I have not posted a thing about my trip or posted any pictures, both of which make me very disappointed in myself. I will post about that damn trip, if it is the last thing I do! Secondly, I am going to keep track of all of the books I read and movies I watch this year. You can visit the post and comment on what I've seen or read any commentary that I leave. Let me let you know right now that I am neither artsy nor analytical in my commentary style. Don't be surprised to read, "I loved it" or "OMG!". (Just FYI I watch a lot of movies). When I was younger I didn't watch anything but sports on TV with my day or old Westerns and soaps with my mom. Now there is at least one TV on in the house at any given time. We have HBO and I take full advantage of that. My brain gets thrown of by my working nights. So on my nights off when I can't sleep I watch movies. To start off, I watched What Dreams May Come.
And just because, a meme that a few people on my F-list have done:
1. What did you do in 2008 that you've never done before?
~I got and used my passport.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
~I didn't make any resolutions. See above.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
~YES! I forgot to tell you guys! My youngest brother's girlfriend, Nikki (heatherenchantd) had a little girl this year. Her name is Ella. She has been a bright spot in my life. In three days she will be five months old. I like to think that I am her second favorite place to rest her head. Today as she lay on my
My cousin, Faith Marie, is about to pop right now, too. She is expecting twin boys!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
~Luckily I didn't loose anyone close to me this year. My dad told me on Wednesday, that my Tia Romana passed away this past week. I'm not sad. I met her when I was a baby, so I don't even remember her.
5. What countries did you visit?
~I went to England.
6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
~I would like to have more willpower and focus to work out more. I want to join a dance class, but I'm kind of chicken. I think I may do it if my cousin, Misty does it with me.
7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
~I am horrible with dates. I may remember events, but usually not the date, unless it was something huge. November 15 is a big day that nothing happened. Instead of watching Creditor, I was stuck in Atlanta. December 11 was another big day. I watched Nobel Son for the third time, and my wallet was stolen in the theater.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
~Still being alive. Traveling to a foreign country alone.
9. What was your biggest failure?
~Missing seeing Alan Rickman by this much. *holding fingers an inch apart*
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
~I have a laundry list of medical ailments. Two problems that I had this year was being hospitalized in October for chest pain (still trying to work out why) and spraining my ankle, bad, in November.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
~My youngest brother, Omar. He has made so many improvements in his attitude. I thinks a big hand goes to Nikki who moved in with us after the baby was born. He still needs some work but I think he is well on his way to becoming a mature young man.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
~See number 12. You have to start somewhere. Also myself. I have let things in my life spiral out of control for too long.
14. Where did most of your money go?
~Bills and groceries. Mostly bills.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
~I was super excited about my London trip.
16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
~Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?
~Happier, I guess.
b) thinner or fatter?
~I'm about the same.

~Less planning, more doing.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Christmas has come and gone. I spent it with my family.

23. How many one-night stands?
24. What was your favourite TV program?
~House. I stopped watching Heroes mid-season. I'll catch up when it comes out on DVD.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
~No. The one person that I was closest to hating, died last year('07) on Christmas. You could say it was a gift. I know that sounds horrible, but I can't help it.
26. What was the best book you read?
~My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
28. What did you want and get?
~Omar got me Mamma Mia for Christmas. YAY!
29. What did you want and not get?
~I wanted, but didn't get, a tray table for my laptop while I'm in bed. Something like this or this. (Was I supposed to say something deep, like world peace?)
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
~I could say Nobel Son or Bottle Shock, both of which I liked very much, but I liked The Family That Preys even more. Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard and Tyler Perry in a family drama story with a moral. What's not to love?
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
~I turned twenty-eight on my birthday. I spent most of the day sleeping in preparation of working the night shift, just like I did on my last birthday. I did get to spend the night with most of my friends at work.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

34. What kept you sane?
~My LJ. You guys. My RL best friend, Chipo. My mom.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
~Um. . . hello!
a. Alan Rickman

e. Marco Antonio Solis
The list could go on, but I'll stop myself there.

37. Who did you miss?
~I missed my sister. We had a falling out last Christmas. We started speaking to each other again late summer/early fall.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
~I can't pick just one person. On LJ, there are so many of you that have been a blessing to me. Your words of encouragement mean more than I can say. In real life, I met starrose17 and kyriaofdelphi, who are both wonderful in so many different ways! Meeting with you ladies was the highlight of my trip to London!
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
~Always ask for money upfront. Don't pay first and expect to get reimbursed.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Jason Mraz - The Beauty In Ugly (Listen to the whole song. It's pretty good.)
She's so big-hearted
But not so remarkable
Just an ordinary humble girl
Expecting nothing as we're made to think it's a pretty person's world.
I'm feeling generous, so I'm also going to tell you what my Theme Song is. You'll love it.
Mika - Big Girl
